Individuals can state on their driver’s licenses their desire to donate their organs or bodily tissues upon their deaths. There is a brief questionnaire about organ donation that is part of the application for a driver’s license. When individuals answer “yes” to the questions about organ and tissue donation on their license applications, then the department of motor vehicles will place a symbol (e.g. a red heart with a “Y” in the center) on the front of their licenses, permits, or ID cards. Individuals must also sign the back of the license and discuss their wish to donate their organs with their families. By indicating their wish to donate their organs, their names will most likely be entered in a computerized registry.
