A driver’s license expires within a statutorily set number of years after the driver first acquires it. The longevity of a license varies somewhat from state to state, with either three or five years being the normal term of a license. In some states, individuals may be able to renew their licenses by mail, but usually they will be required to appear in person and pass a vision test. Additionally, they may be required to take other exams if licensing officials in their state determine that it is necessary. States assess fee for a license renewals.
