What Happens If You Don’t Pay Rent in Canada? Eviction Rules Explained

Failing to pay rent in Canada can quickly lead to legel action. While landlords are required to follow a formal process, non-payment is one of the strongest grounds for eviction.

Step 1: Late rent notice

If rent is not paid on time, your landlord may issue a notice requesting payment. Quebec law does not require a long grace period unless your lease states otherwise.

Step 2: Tribunal application

If rent remains unpaid, the landlord can file a claim with the Tribunal administratif du logement (TAL).

They may request:

Payment of unpaid rent
Lease termination
Eviction order
Step 3: Eviction decision

If the tribunal rules against you, you may be ordered to:

Pay overdue rent
Vacate the unit if payment is not made
Important note:

In some cases, tenants may avoid eviction by paying all outstanding rent before the final judgment.
